"I have come that they may have LIFE...

... and have it TO THE FULL."[john 10:10]

Valentin, 3rd successor of the "King of D ward". He had to take a couple trips back to the OR due to complications, but he has since transferred his reign back home and is healing well!

Dr. Haydon, orthopedic surgeon by day, paper airplane and snowflake craftsman by night. B ward is always the happening place!

Emily doing some very serious assisting for Dr. Haydon. She is a great encouragement to me, right from the start of "You worked at Duke Children's?? I worked there!" It's a small world, after all.

Fast friends! One of my favorite parts of working on the wards here is seeing the bonds that develop between the patients.

This lovely Aussie is not only the queen of hip-hop but a dear friend of mine and a fabulous peds nurse. Laura is dearly missed here on the ship but is soon to be off on her next adventure-in-love with MSF (Doctors without Borders)!

That special moment when a little one gets to see their "new face" for the first time after a cleft lip repair.

Kacie says she isn't a peds nurse... but I beg to differ! :) Also, this little guy was the sweetest thing ever (if you couldn't already tell that from his smile). Got to check in with him recently at one of his outpatient appointments... His rehab after a cleft palate repair is going great-- largely in thanks to his wonderfully attentive Papa!
My Canadian cabinmate, Nelleke, who sadly has now returned to her motherland.  She's sharing a laugh with Alistera, my Ugandan(!) friend who I blogged about here...

Thelma is the perfect combination of South African sass and sweetness. I think some of that sass may have rubbed off on Alis... :)

The chaplaincy team fills the wards with songs each day. This boat is rockin'!

From shy one who didn't want us to even look in her direction, to smiles & snuggles! The power of love, my friends. Kudos to Jas for helping break through this little girl's shell. :)

Laura & Alphonse-- these two inspire me with their courage and they way they walk through life's challenges with hope and RESILIENCE!

We love Brice and there is one very important thing you need to know about him...

... DON'T mess with his balloon!! :)

Can, can, can we do the can-can? Karyn & Mel don't seem too convinced...
Yes, D ward nurses can! (This may or may not have been my crazy idea...)

Every day from 2:30-3:30 we take all the patients (who are able) up four flights of stairs and out to Deck 7 for some Vitamin D, fresh albeit fishy air, and just all-around fun! Sometimes the students from Mercy Ships' academy join in the excitement!

HOPE center arts & crafts! With the palm trees, it looks a lot like Pointe-Noire!

The driving age requirements are a bit different here in Congo...

Laura & I at the HOPE center (Mercy Ships' rehab/recovery center) with 2 of D Ward's awesome patients, now well on their way to recovery! (Donald, far left; The Original 'King of D ward' Alphonse, mid back)
